Lesson 1.1: What is Research? Types & Purpose

Ever wondered why some questions keep popping into your head?

Like “Why do certain crew members isolate themselves?” or

“What’s the best way to improve teamwork at sea?”

That’s where research begins—with curiosity.

Types of Research

Research is more than just reading or collecting data—it’s a journey of discovering answers in a structured way. Some research dives deep into theory (basic research), while others solve immediate problems (applied research). Some count things (quantitative), while others tell stories (qualitative). And sometimes, we need a mix of both.

Whether you’re exploring something new, explaining a trend, or solving a real-world issue, research gives you the power to back your ideas with evidence.
